Wallace Beery and Gloria Swanson (1916)

On March 27, 1916, 30-year-old Wallace Beery married Gloria Swanson on her 17th birthday with her mother’s consent. The marriage was a disaster from the start. On their wedding night, Wallace got drunk and raped Gloria. After she became pregnant he tricked her into swallowing an abortifacient.

In her 1980 autobiography Swanson on Swanson, Gloria describes the incident:

I was brushing my hair when he came into the room. He gave me a look that made me turn away, but he didn’t say anything. Then he turned out the light and in the darkness pulled me to him. I gave a coquettish little command to stop that I thought would make him laugh. Still he said nothing. He turned me and pushed me backward until I fell on the bed. He fell beside me, and there was nothing romantic about the way he began to repeat that I was driving him crazy.

He was raking his hands over me and pulling at my nightie until I heard it rip. I pleaded with him to stop, to wait, to turn on the light. His beard was scraping my skin and his breath smelled. He kept repeating obscene things and making advances with his hand and tongue while he turned his body this way and that and awkwardly undid his buttons and squirmed out of his clothes.

Then he forced my body into position and began hurting me, hurting me terribly. I couldn’t stand it. I begged him to stop, to listen to me, and finally when I couldn’t stand it any longer, I screamed. He told me to be quiet, not to wake the whole hotel, and he said it in a voice of quiet, filthy conspiracy. The pain became so great that I thought I must be dying. I couldn’t move for the pain. When he finally rolled away, I could feel blood everywhere.

Gloria’s mother Addie, in the room next door did not come to her aide and they never spoke about that night. Gloria discovered that she was pregnant a few months later. One morning she had asked

Wallace

to buy her something from the pharmacy to relieve her severe cramps. He bought her bottle of medication which she took without asking any questions. She became nauseous and passed out. When she woke up a nurse told her that she had lost her baby. She later discovered that

Wallace

had given her poison to abort their baby. She left him soon after this incident.

Joe Louis marries Marva Trotter before his fight against Max Baer on September 24, 1935.

(Original Caption) Within a little more than an hour after he had disposed of Max Baer, in a slashing bout that ended by knockout in the fourth round, Joe Louis rushed to his bride of a few hours, the former Miss Marva Trotter and the two are seen here in their temporary quarters at 381 Edgecomb Avenue in the Bronx. Joe and Marva were married in the apartment just two hours and a few minutes before Joe stepped into the ting against Max. He seems the same stoical and methodical battler, despite his new status and hammered down Max with murderous lefts and rights in as fast a four round battle as has been seen in these environs in many a long day.

O.J. Simpson and Marguerite Whitley

on their wedding day in San Francisco on June 24, 1967.

O.J.

and

Marguerite

met in high school, when

Marguerite

was dating one of O.J.’s close friend, A.C. Cowlings,

the same guy who ended up driving his getaway car in 1994. When they married he was 19, she was 18. Marguerite

gave birth to the couple’s first child, Arnelle, in 1968. Their second child, Jason, was born in 1970. They had a third child, Aaren, in 1977. Aaren died on August 18, 1979 in a pool while in the custody of Marguerite. O.J. blamed Marguerite for her death.

The marriage faltered early, with temporary separations starting in early 1970. Records do not indicate what the disputes were about. In 1973,

Marguerite asked her lawyer to start divorce proceedings, which were soon called off. They had a legal separation in 1975 before reconciling.

Their final separation came in 1978; divorce became final in 1979.

O.J. began dating future wife Nicole Brown in 1977, while he was married. Marguerite

was married twice more after divorcing O.J.

Sylvester Stallone and Brigitte Nielsen on their wedding day at the home of producer Irwin Winkler in Beverly Hills on December 15, 1985.

You’re a married man with two children, alone in a hotel on a business trip and a 21-year-old woman sends a provocative photograph of herself up to your room. She asks to meet you. You learn that the woman is also married, but she seems to have lost interest in her husband and her baby son. Your own mother describes the woman as “a broad.”

Would you marry her?

Most marriage counselors would advise against such a union, but Sylvester Stallone wed Brigitte Nielsen as soon as both were free of their respective spouses. The bride wore white. She probably wore flats, too. Now, after less than two years of marriage, Stallone, 41, is seeking a divorce from Nielsen, 24, citing “irreconcilable differences.” The only other grounds for the dissolution of marriage in the state of California is “incurable insanity.” Stallone did not select that option.

Mike Tyson and wife Robin Givens attend 40th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards on August 28, 1988 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.

In his book, “Undisputed Truth” Tyson accuses actress, ex-wife Robin Givens of trying to extort him along with her mother, Ruth Roper Givens. Tyson was at the height of his boxing career when he met Givens in 1987, with the legendary boxer being worth $50 million. According to Tyson, Givens allegedly faked a pregnancy so that she could receive millions from him. He also states in his book how the conniving pair of women were “on the prowl for a big Black celebrity for Robin,” with Roper allegedly arranging their marriage because Givens was supposed to be pregnant at the time.

Soon after, Tyson says his accountant told him that Givens was demanding that the money be released from his account for the home purchase. Tyson says he not only gave the women the $5 million for the home but another $10 million that went in to a separate account. It was during this time that Givens reportedly claimed that she had miscarried: “She was supposedly three months pregnant when we got married. Now it was June  and she hadn’t gained a pound, so the next thing I knew she was in bed and claimed she had miscarried our baby.”

After the miscarriage in May 1988, the marriage began to disintegrate. Robin accused Mike of domestic violence, while he accused her of alienation and only being interested in his money. They did not have a prenuptial agreement and there were published reports that she received a $10 million divorce settlement, but Robin claims she didn’t receive a dime.
