R. Kelly and Aaliyah in 1994 before an appearance on BET. Gregg Diggs, on right, programmed the music for BET and booked them that day.

She was 12 when they met. Her uncle, Barry Hankerson, was Kelly’s manager at the time. By 1993, Aaliyah was flying from her home in Detroit to work with Kelly in Chicago. Jive released her debut album in May 1994. “Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number,” produced and written by Kelly, that would go on to sell millions.

That summer, the pair appeared on BET’s “Video Soul.” Leslie Segar, the show’s co-host, remembers Jive representatives telling BET it should not ask about their personal relationship or Aaliyah’s age.

But Kelly, then 27, and Aaliyah, 15, came before the cameras wearing conspicuously matching plaid shirts. Segar found it impossible to not to go there.

“Okay, let’s clear something else,” she said on air. “Everybody seems to think y’all either boyfriend or girlfriend, or cousins or friends. Let’s just get the record straight.”

“No, no, we’re not related at all,” Aaliyah replied. “We’re just very close. This is my best friend.”

Later, Segar broached the second topic.

“For the record, you are how old?”

“That’s a secret,” Aaliyah said, playfully putting a finger to her lips. “Shhhhh.”

Kelly decided they should get married. At 15, Aaliyah would need her parents’ permission. But Kelly didn’t tell them of his plans. In late August, he flew her to Chicago, where Demetrius Smith, his tour manager, says he took her to get a fake ID stating that she was 18. Kelly and Aaliyah were married Aug. 31, 1994, at the Sheraton Gateway Suites in Rosemont, Ill., according to paperwork filed with the Cook County Clerk on Sept. 6, 1994.

The marriage collapsed within days, after Aaliyah returned home and told her parents. The Haughtons eventually got the marriage expunged.

Joe Louis and Jesse Owens in the 1930′s

Joe Louis

(May 13, 1914 – April 12, 1981) and Jesse Owens

(September 12, 1913 – March 31, 1980) were both born in Alabama. They were the grandsons of slaves and the sons of sharecroppers. They both stammered as kids before their families migrated north in the 1920’s, where they began their athletic careers; Owens as a runner in Cleveland and Louis as a boxer in Detroit.

Both Owens and Louis became heroic figures at a time when baseball, basketball and football were still segregated. Owens defied Hitler and Brundage; Louis defeated Schmeling and fought his way to victory in the 1930’s and 40’s.

After the 1936 Olympics, the US track and field team was scheduled to compete in Sweden. Owens opted to return to the U.S., thinking he would get lucrative endorsement offers. The US Olympic Committee was furious that he returned home to capitalize on his success. They stripped him of his amateur status and banned him from further competitions.

Unlike Owens, who had been banished so young, Louis fought for years. He held the world heavyweight title from 1937 to 1949 and made 25 successful championship defenses.Owens and Louis remained friends for 45 years, and both died at the age of 66.

Aretha Franklin with her father,

Bishop C.L. Franklin (1915 – 1984), and her sister, fellow singer

Erma Franklin

(1938 – 2002) in New York, 1971.

C.L. Franklin served as the pastor of New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit from 1946 to 1979. The church was a commonplace for orgies which Ray Charles described as a “sex circus.” In 1940, while married to his daughter’s mother, Barbara Siggers, C.L. Franklin fathered a daughter named Carl Ellan Kelley (née Jennings) by Mildred Jennings, a 12-year-old girl in his New Salem Baptist Church congregation. Aretha also became pregnant at the age of just 12 in 1954. She gave birth to a baby boy she named Clarence Franklin, after her dad on January 28, 1955. Rumors swirled that her own father was the father of her first child but it was Donald Burk, a guy she knew from school. At the age of 14 on January 22, 1957, Aretha had a second child named Edward Franklin after his father Edward Jordan. In 1979, C.L. was shot during an attempted robbery. He remained in a coma until his death in 1984.
