Etta Duryea was Jack Johnson’s first wife, they married in 1911. She was a

well-educated

Brooklyn society woman. Jack’s infidelity, his abusive behavior and the hostile reaction of the public caused her to became depressed. He once beat her so badly that she was hospitalized.

She committed suicide in 1912. When Jack died in 1946, his wife

buried him in Chicago next to Etta.
